WORDS IN ART 2D & 3D
Something Lost, Something Found
A retrospective exhibition of works by Maxine McKee
As a contemporary artist Drawing is at the centre of my art practice of mixed media and ceramic sculptures.
My process is a lengthy one and drawing informs me in the pursuit for answers to the many questions that arrive at each stage of the process.
My work uses symbolism that sends a strong message and generates a universal conversation and is open to interpretation. However, this body of work tells a personal story that begins with questions around abandonment, grief and neglect and ends with works that have presented celebrative answers for the me throughout many years of making and brings closure to this theme.
The exhibition comes in chapters. In one of the chapters the symbolism is centred around the scarecrow, whose role is to care for the garden. With head down and lifelessness it under performs in its role. The garden is unprotected and open to intruders that insert themselves in the space with no regard, in turn, it is desecrated and others who rely on the garden as their life source battle for survival.
Another chapter explores the ‘Dad’, using symbolic motifs that breaks down a man’s shirt into its pattern pieces dissecting it to investigate who he was as a man.
Works on Paper using mixed media and traditional drawings, work together with Ceramic sculptures and share a narrative that will challenge the viewer.

Artists Maxine McKee, Anton Hasell, Judy Laycock, Marysia Jarosinska and Glenda Anstey-Spring formed the team of presenters.
